Les Oeuvres Morales et Philosophiques de Plutarque, Amyot, Jacques translated from the Greek by
5 Amyot, Jacques translated from the Greek by Les Oeuvres Morales et Philosophiques de Plutarque
Paris, France Chez Claude Morel 1618 Hardcover Collectible: Acceptable Hardcover
Folio. 677 pages plus an extensive "Table de tous Les Opuscules de Plutarque". Thin vellum over boards, peeling at spine. Some (old) tape at hnges and across spine. The first panel only of the spine is missing. Both hinges are cracked but holding. The original hand written title "Plutarque" is chipped at very top corner of the second panel. Six panels, five bands. Complete but no endpapers. Early edition of this much reprinted classic translation from the Greek (first printed 1572). North's English translation was 1579). Plutarch's philosophical works, many of them dialogues, cover half of his literary output. In modern times they have been published under the collective term Moralia. Plutarch was a great favorite of the Romantic Circle. (Mary Shelley chose Plutarch for Frankenstein's reading). We are speculating somewhat wildly upon the signature of "John May 1801" written at top of title page. Possibly Southey's friend and financial adviser, to whom many letters were written by Southey in this period? The provenance of this copy was England. Amyot's vigorous and idiomatic version of Plutarch Lives was translated into English by Sir Thomas North, and supplied Shakespeare with materials for his Roman plays. Amyot's translations of Plutarch exercised great influence over successive generations of French writers and others.

16 Bentley, Richard, Library-Keeper to His Majesty A Dissertation upon the Epistles of Phalaris: With an Answer to the Objections of the Hon. Charles Boyle....To which are added, Dr. Bentley's Dissertation on the Epistles of Themistocles, Socrates, Euripides, and others; and the Fables of Aesop as originally printed with Occasional Remarks on the Whole [Second edition, 1777]
London, England W. Bowyer and J. Nichols 1777 First of this edition Hardcover Very good Hardcover
London, 1777. First of this second edition, of his dissertation originally published in 1699. A beautifully appointed scholarly work. This copy is disbound, missing spine, with detached boards and marbled endpapers in tact. Text is in exceptional condition. Richard Bentley (1662 ??1742) was an English classical scholar, critic, and theologian. He was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. The first Englishman to be ranked with the great heroes of classical learning, Bentley was known for his literary and textual criticism. Called the "founder of historical philology", Bentley is credited with the creation of the English school of Hellenism, and introduced the first competitive written examinations in a Western university. His Dissertation on the Epistles of Phalaris was his master work in the field. He engaged the long debated standing of this Epistle, tangling with Charles Boyle of Christ Church, who had appealed for a copy in the Royal Library for his edition of Phalaris. Bentley's dissertation was his response to the request. He greatly advanced the state of the Royal Library at St. James Palace, and the Cambridge University Library.
