First edition. Scarce. Original brown cloth. Good, evenly dulled with minor dampstain to top inside corner of rear board. Lightly worn at head heel and edges. 3 tiny chips at outer hinge, right. Does not affect text. Chase was a supporter of the temperance, abolitionist, and spiritualist movements. He wrote books and articles, and won several political offices in Wisconsin, Missouri and California. This volume documents an uncommon 'intercourse' between his political and spiritualist ambitions. As well as reflections on those who shared the podium, from mediums to famous political figures. Inspired by the French philosopher Fourier, he was involved in a utopian living experiment and helped to organize and fund land purchases for a local "Phalanx", which enterprise later became a part of Ripon, WI. Original, earliest, typescript draft with tipped in photo, hand filled graph and white-out corrections, 1934. Titled wraps as printed, likely stapled, with paper spine. Small stain to wrap and some chipping to spine. Loaves and Fishes... was first published by the author in 1935. The copy is inscribed "To Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Brownell with the best wishes of the writer", with a pencil sketch below (of the author?). Laid in are two folded typescript MSS: 1. "Experimental and Spontaneous Food Increases Due to Psychic Factors", a "History showing Development of the Experiments" (2 single spaced 8 1/2" x 17" pages with a chart attached), when Haley was Haley was President of the California Psychical Research Society. The study addresses a long-speculated phenomenon, often cited by both skeptics and believers. 2. A very rough draft record of an experiment with a San Francisco dentist on "Expansion of Substance", with penciled corrections (7 pages 8 1/2" by 11", double-spaced. (From bookseller's memo in book): "It is not widely known that the multiplication of food is not confined to Jesus' miracle of the loaves and fishes...Even less known, even by students of parapsychology and the occult, are the incidents of food multiplication in modern times and that experimental work has been done in the attempt to establish the reality of the phenomenon".Haley's study went into a second edition (1960) which is now reprinted and available on on Amazon.

Including stenographic records of seances and 10 photos of the slates from sittings, signed by spirit guides and contacts. John Sumpter King (1843?1921) was a Medical doctor, distinguished writer, psychical researcher, founder of the Canadian Society for Psychical Research, and an active participant in a large number of fraternal organizations, including the Freemasons and Odd Fellows. In Dawn of the Awakened Mind (1920), King details his personal experience of postmortem communication with departed family members, including his wife May with whom he planned communication codes from beyond the grave. He also received communications from SPIRIT GUIDES and well-known psychical researchers. King's main spirit Control claimed to be the Neoplatonic philosopher Hypatia (370?415). A diminishing stain, affects endpapers and @10 pages at both beginning and end of the volume. The contents reference a number of scientific and philosophic sources, in a an extensive examination of both basis and cases of spiritualist phenomena. This book has a story. Small hand numbered round paper label ("122") mid-spine, and a booksellers plate for "Dale News, Lnc. Lily Dale, NY (United States)" Lily Dale was incorporated in 1879 as Cassadaga Lake Free Association, a camp and meeting place for Spiritualists and Freethinkers. The name was changed to The City of Light in 1903 and finally to Lily Dale Assembly in 1906. The purpose of Lily Dale is to further the science, philosophy, and religion of Spiritualism, which enterprise continues to this day. Each year approximately 22,000 visitors come for classes, workshops, public church services and mediumship demonstrations, lectures, and private appointments with mediums. Epes Sargent (1813?1880) was an American editor, poet and playwright (a member of the "Knickerbocker group). He became captivated with the notion of communicating with "the beyond"; hosted many sťances, and philosophical discussions. He published Planchette, or the Despair of Science (1869), The Proof Palpable of Immortality (1875), and his most popular, The Scientific Basis of Spiritualism (1880).
