Emile-Auguste Chartier (1868 ? 1951), commonly known as Alain, was a French philosopher, journalist, and pacifist. He adopted his pseudonym in homage to the 15th-century Norman poet Alain Chartier.Alain Chartier (c.?1385 ? 1430) was a French poet and political writer. He deeply influenced his pupils, who included Raymond Aron, Simone Weil, Georges Canguilhem, André Maurois, and Simone de Beauvoir, who called Alain the greatest teacher of their generation.
