2 volumes. Translated from the Greek by Thomas Wentworth Higginson. A new and revised edition. 3/4 leather, with marbled boards and endpapers. Spines are evenly sunned (darkend). Leather labels are whole and gilt is bright. Higginson was an activist Unitarian minister, abolitionist and supporter of women's rights. He was one of the "Secret Six" who supported John Brown. A deeply philosophical man, he was closely associated with the Transcendentalist Ellery Channing. He brought Epictetus' philosophy to the 19th century conversation. He also corresponded with and co-edited the first publication of Emily Dickinson's poems.
