8 Anonymous [Elizabeth Sara Sheppard] Uncle Jack the Fault Killer
New York, NY Robert Carter & Brothers 1860 First edition Hardcover Collectible: Good Hardcover
First edition. Rare. Original brown pebbled cloth with publisher's mark embossed on front, and lightly decorated gilt spine. Good. A bizarre and entertaining foray into mid 19th century mores and manners. It begins, "Uncle Jack's gentleman name was Major Gray. He had been a soldier in India, a very brave soldier too, and was wounded many times". Worldly wisdom is embedded in this constant and lively bevy of questions and commentary between uncle, nephew and neice. The perspective of the narrator is amused and wry. Illustrated with several plates. Unpredictable, but not excessive foxing to text.
