The World's Parliament of Religions, Volumes I and II : An Illustrated and Popular Story of the World's First Parliament of Religions, Held in Chicago in Connection with the Columbian Exposition of 1893, Barrows, Rev. John Henry
12 Barrows, Rev. John Henry The World's Parliament of Religions, Volumes I and II : An Illustrated and Popular Story of the World's First Parliament of Religions, Held in Chicago in Connection with the Columbian Exposition of 1893
The Parliament Publishing Company 1893-01-01 First Edition Hardcover Used: Very Good Hardcover
First edition, 1893. 2 volumes. 1600 pages, comprising I. The History of the Parliament; II. Introduction to the Parlialment Papers; and III. The Parliament Papers. Blue cloth, gilt, very good condition, tight bindings. No former owner marks. The Parliament of Religions was by far the largest of the congresses held in conjunction with the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It introduced for the first time, teachers from Asian traditions which would become highly influential in America in succeeding years. Swami Vivikananda, representing Hindu traditions, was among the most notable of these . Dr. Barrows is best known for organizing and leading World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago by bringing together renowned persons of different religious backgrounds from all over the world to increase interest in the studies of religions, clarify the misconceptions about varying religious traditions. He is credited for introducing a new concept of "tolerance" and "understanding" between all nations and religions through the Parliament. More than 4000 people gathered in the "Hall of Columbus". Admittedly, the Parliament was dominated by English-speaking Christian speakers with representatives from other religious faiths ? 12 speakers represented Buddhism; 11 speakers represented Judaism; 8 from Hinduism; 2 each from Islam, Parsi, Confucianism, and Shintoism; and 1 each from Taoism and Jainism. The convention continued for seventeen days. It seems that the Parliament was able to introduce the importance of the comparative study of religions in order to maintain "mutual good understanding" among the various religious traditions as hoped by the 19th century's noted comparative religion scholar, Max Müller. It was a pinnacle.
