8 The Holy Bible, with a complete commentary, entirely selected from the writings of Poole, Henry, Dodridge, Brown, Coke, and other eminent commentators. Embellished with elegant engravings
Manchester, England Russell & Allen 1812 First of this edition Hardcover good Hardcover Oversize
Scarce English dissenter's edition of the Holy Bible. Manchester: Russell & Allen, (1812)-1814. Folio, 11x17. In two parts: Genesis-Apocrypha (undated title page, some sources citing 1812), and the New Testament, with a separate title page dated 1814 (see below). The whole is unpaginated with printed binder's notations at bottom right corners, and book and chapter headings at the top. Originally bound as one volume. The whole is handsomely and professionally rebound in full black leather, circa mid 20th century, with a gilt decorated spine of the period and (faux) raised bands and new marbled endpapers. Professional repairs to frontispiece and title page. Full page engraved illustrations, 32 count (including frontispiece) with and engraved title page. The 18th century style engravings from various sources are distributed unevenly throughout the text, illustrating the more famous bible stories. Plates all have edge stain, some are evenly foxed; in two the stain affects the very edge of the engraving. Text is in very good condition, with occasional front edge stain. Though the margin is ample and even, it may have been cut down to eliminate most of the staining when rebound. It is possible that there is introductory or chapter information missing between the title page and first page of Genesis, but the binding is tight. This is a high quality professional restoration and rebinding. Explanatory notes and Reflections from the works of the commentators cites, footnoted at the bottom of each page. The title page for the second part, reveals the purposes and goals of this edition: "The New Testament of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; Wherein The Sacred Text is at large recited, the sense explained, and the instructive example of the Blessed Jesus and his Holy Apostles, to our imitation recommended Illustrated with Valuable Notes and Annotations...the Objections of Deists and Infidels answered....an the whole of Divine Revelation...displayed in its original Purity...with Practical Reflections and Useful Admonitions at the end of each (bible) chapter from Poole, Henry, Doddridge, Brown, Coke etc. etc. The whole calculated to enlighten the Understanding, purify the Heart, and promote the Cause of Virtue and Piety, and thereby establish the Happiness and Peace of Christian Families in this World, and secure their eternal Salvation in the next". Doddridge (1702?1751), like the other commentators whose comments illumine this 1814 bible, was a non-conformist English divine. A nonconformist was any English subject belonging to a non-Anglican church or, more broadly, any person who advocated religious liberty. The strict religious tests embodied in the laws of the Clarendon code and other penal laws excluded a substantial section of English society from public affairs and benefits, including certification of university degrees, for well more than a century and a half. Doddridge himself observed ?the number of dissenters is greatly increased...? He had an eye to the political importance of a united nonconformist body and made recommendations for a healing and unifying policy. Doddridge carried out his own ideal with great fidelity and with conspicuous success, doing more than any man in the 18th century to obliterate old party lines, and to unite nonconformists on a common religious ground (wiki). End resources include a "Chronological Index of the Years and Times From Adam Unto Christ", a "Geographical Index", a "Brief Chronological Catalogue of the Apostles and Their Successors...", a page with the names and titles ascribed to Jesus and the Church of God in scripture, "A Brief Table of the Interpretation of the Proper Names chiefly contained in the Old Testament", with a page of "testimonies in favor of the bible". Original front endpapers are missing. Original rear endpapers are present, with marked but stablized waterstain to lower extended corner. Mr. Brewer please contact us.
